What is ergonomics?

Most people have heard of ergonomics and think it is something to do with posture and seating, or with the design of car controls and instruments. Ergonomics certainly includes this… but it is also much more!

Ergonomics involves applying scientific information about humans to the design of objects, systems and environments for human use. Ergonomic principles can be applied to everything that involves people – work systems, sports and leisure, health and safety – if these are to be well designed.

Is this the Evolution of Man?

Does your computer workstation give you aching muscles and eyestrain? Does your car seat leave you aching after long journeys? These types of problems and inconveniences can be helped – if ergonomic principles are applied.

Ergonomics is an approach which puts the emphasis on human needs and capabilities – when designing technological systems. It aims to ensure that humans and technology work in complete harmony. The equipment and tasks should suit the human characteristics, rather than the other way around!
